Audiovox SMT5600 vs. MPx220

OK – So it’s been about a week since I switched over from my MPx220 to my Audiovox SMT5600, and I love it. Oh sure, the phone has some quirks, but overall it’s a nice little piece of hardware.

This won’t be a review. Why? Because I don’t like to write reviews. Instead I’ll just list a couple of the pros, a couple of the cons, a couple of the things that I like, and a couple of the things that could take you a little bit to find. Basically I’m just going to ramble a bit.

Pros:

The build quality is great. Oh sure -- There is the ever-present HTC dust issue, but, other than that, the phone just feels great in your hand. It feels solid and you don’t get that unnerving gut-feeling that, at any minute, the phone will start disintegrating, a trait found in many of today’s plastic phones.

The camera might only be VGA, but the MPx220’s 1.3 mega pixel camera has nothing on it. Don’t get me wrong; you wouldn’t want to replace your digital camera with either of the offerings. However, you certainly can’t point to the camera as a reason to choose the MPx.

Windows Media Player 10 is worth its weight in gold. Perhaps that’s overstating it a bit. More accurately, the difference between WMP10 and its predecessors is like night and day. This is the first version of the mobile player where I’ve felt comfortable thinking of it as an actual player. Previous versions were “OK in a pinch,” but they all lacked the niceties needed to use it as an everyday player. WMP10 is finally there.

The screen is just enough bigger than the MPx220’s to make me happy. I always felt that the MPx’s screen was cramped. The SMT’s desktop feels nicely proportioned.

Voice dialing through Bluetooth should work with the SMT. One of my absolute biggest complaints with the MPx220 was its lack of ability to voice dial through BT. What’s the point of BT if you have to take the phone out of your pocket? While the VoiceCommands solution found in the MPx220 was much more robust, it didn't work via BT. For me this was a deal breaker.

Cons:

It’s a little frustrating that voice dial won’t work if the keypad is locked. With a candy bar design I often find that I lock the keys before putting the phone in my pocket. This, of course, is to avoid “my pocket” calling people. If you lock the keys, BT voice dial won’t work. It’s a stupid bug that’s probably fixable, but I’ve learned over the years that consumer electronics RARELY get fixed.

I’m not sure exactly what’s going on with this next one. So, I’ll only venture a random guess in a hope to describe the problem. It appears that the desktop version of Windows Media Player and ActiveSync are fighting for control of the device. I had absolutely no problems syncing the device using ActiveSync before I a) added an SD card and b) told WMP to automatically sync the information with the SD card. Somebody should take a look at this.

Windows Media Player transcodes my TV Shows to a format that’s even smaller than the screen. The result is that I watch Futurama with a big black band around the content. For those HD freaks out there it’s even more frustrating than when a station upconverts the 4:3 SD signal of a letterboxed show.

I really wish that there were a way to set the library pecking order in WMP. My media is on the SD card. Yet, the library ALWAYS starts with the device library.

A couple tips for the SMT5600:

If you hold down the call button, you can turn speakerphone on and off (during a call).

Holding down the # button while entering text will give you a symbols page.

Tap the * button to cycle through the different text entry modes (e.g. abc, ABC, T9, etc.)

If you are syncing wirelessly with an Exchange server and are getting Internet_45 errors, it’s because your cert for SSL isn’t checkable. To disable cert checking use these directions:

Another cool feature: the included headphones double as both A/V headphones and a phone headset. The other day I was walking around listening to music when my music paused for a second and the phone rang through the earphones. Surprised, I tapped the button on the headphones to answer the phone. I talked for a few minutes and hung up. The music then resumed... all without pulling the phone out of my pocket. Totally cool.

Beat that iPod :)
