Never can it be said that I don't listen to you people!

If you're like me (and once again ... God help you if you are), you do the following. You leave a comment on a blog and then for the next 12 hours you keep checking back to see if someone responded to your comment. This can get frustrating as people rarely seem to be on your schedule.

I've seen two ways of dealing with this:

1) Some sites allow you to sign up for notifications. This isn’t a great solution because it often involves registering and verifying that you are, in fact, who you say you are. It’s also often difficult to make the emails stop coming. Basically, it’s a pain.

2) Other sites have an RSS feed just for comments. For me, this isn’t much better. Comments start to come too quickly and your comments are often lost in the shuffle.

Here at The Evil Empire we strive to do better. After you’ve posted, look over to the right of your name. You’ll see an RSS logo. This is your personalized feed.

It’s an RSS feed of all the comments from all the threads on which you posted. Think of it like an auto-subscription via RSS to all the threads you care about.

If you don’t know what RSS is, ignore this whole post.

Please let me know if it works with your reader/service. I didn’t exactly write it with a spec in front of me. As such, it’s entirely possible that your reader could reject it. In any case, enjoy.

Hmm. So one thing im noticing is that everytime a new comment is posted my reader marks all the comments on that post as 'changed' implying that content for each of those comments has changed (which clearly hasnt happened). Any idea why this would be?

I've added comment counts to the titles to see if that changes things.

Seems to, this comment will serve as a test to confirm that. (It's a nice side effect that having this conversation here decreases the count).

When i went (via sharp reader) to loaded (what turned out to be the wrong, because i hadnt refresed the feed to see where your comment was) page to respond to your comment the count said 1, which surprised me and i switched to a right entry and it jumped to 3 where it has been since. I noticed this happen earlier today too. Is the problem IE caching--the last time i was at that (wrong) page the count had been 1?

I don't know what RSS is . . . I assume it's some kind of "the weblogs you follow have been updated" thingy. But more importantly, why was there no reaction to my totally I337 post? I'll have you know I learned that all from MS.

Erin -- it's possible that I was testing the comment feed. There were a couple of times during the day where I added a comment like "test" and then deleted it a couple of minutes later.

Kara -- I just figured that someone was having a seizure at the computer. I had no idea what that was. I suppose that since I'm in my thirties I'm not down with the hip lingo. ;)

A very interesting site, I think. The Idea of Technology was new for me but worth to be read and thought abot it (although I'm not a native english-speaker and have some difficulties whith this language)
