It's one thing to share with a spouse...
Category:

It's a totally different thing to share with everyone... and that's what I'm about to do.

Do you ever go to pick a dinner plan with your better half and the response is a big helping of "nah..that doesn't sound good?" You, willing to please, ask "What sounds good to you?" The response? The dreaded "I don't know."

The next 15 minutes is spent in a verbal game of tennis.

"What about X?"

"Nah"

"What about Y?"

"ick"

"What do you want?" you try again.

"I don't know"

I'm in the middle of that RIGHT NOW!

I'm really tempted to bring back "The List."

What's the "The List?" you ask.

A few years back we went through a period of time where this game was played WAY too often.

I, being from Mars, took matters into my own hands. I wrote down every possible "standard" that I could think of. Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Salmon, etc. etc. etc. -- they were all there.

We then would take turns crossing off what we thought was the least appealing of the remaining choices. 2 minutes later we had a decision.

Oh sure, this usually meant that we were eating something that nobody really wanted, but we were eating!

(If you thought that this post was interesting, why not read another? Perhaps a random link? Or you could just read about me.)

It's not only with the better half, it's with everyone!

"What do you want to eat?" I say.
"Anything" is the reply. Folks, there is no food called 'Anything' - well, not that I'm aware of, anyway.

I'd love to give that list. However, I can't. The reason? Well... that's for when the counter rolls down to the dreaded "Post Overdue." ;)

And, Erin, NO CHEATING!

I hardly think I've ever cheated! Cheating would be posting nothing/garbage/off topic just to have posted unique entries. I *always* find my comments to be interesting!

Maybe i should secure a domain--like 'whereshouldweeat.com' and write up a little applet that does what you described--presenting genres of food and letting you cross off the ones that don't sound good and then presents you with specific locations once you've decided.
Step 2 would be to create accounts so users can add their own favorite dining spots to catagories, or new catagories, or even choices for things they could make at home--or maybe that would be a spinoff site 'whatshouldicook.com'

I just checked domain availability, and then realized i was getting a little ahead of myself.

Oh -- I liked the idea so much that I actually registered the domain name:

WhatShouldWeEat.com

Ok, surely the counter has rolled over with this comment. I have the same problem, even though I'm having the conversation about what to eat only with myself. (And no, I don't have this conversation out loud. If I did, that would be a whole different problem.) I, too, want to see this ubiquitous list!

LOL! We really need one of those lists! Most of the time, neither of us has a dinner preference when it's time to go out. Just imagine how long THAT decision takes!

By the way, I only just realized that you're the same fellow who writes "The Clicker" on Engadget. Thanks a whole hell of a lot for stopping by GF. Just knowing that someone from Engadget reads my site makes my day!

Remember that time you, me and Ken sat around trying to pick a place to eat that was close by and fast. We came up with the one choice that we knew Will would not be thrilled with--The Olive Garden. We even predicted the exact face and sound he would make once he heard our pick.

Don't worry; I haven't turned off comments. However, I have been forced to do a quick check to make sure that you're not a computer. As such, you will need to answer the question below. Once you've done that, you'll be able to comment with impunity.

Which of the following is an animal (all lowercase)? desk, camera, or bear

Your answer:
