You're probably right, Stephen. As a lifelong fan of the environment, I've always scratched my head at the bashing that most environmentalists give to nuclear power when older sources present equivalent, if not greater, threats. Granted, you don't hear about coal-fired power plants exploding with mushroom clouds, but environmental damage doesn't have to be dramatic for it to be pervasive or long-lasting. I'd much rather see more research go into nuclear power than wind farms, solar farms, or any of the other safe-but-unscalable approaches that neo-environmentalists are promoting these days.

A major problem with nuclear power is that it is a necessary precursor to nuclear weapons, and thus the proliferation of nuclear power will lead inevitably to the proliferation of nuclear weapons (trusting wise men to steer clear of this is wishful thinking).
The scalable power promised by nuclear power also increases the danger of overpopulation. Within ecosystems, limited resources dictate animal population levels. Limit industry by limiting power, and you will limit the total supportable population.

I think that reasoning is somewhat skewed, since far more people interact with fossil fuels than with atomic energy. I'm not one to get the heeby jeebies with respect to nukes, but the reasoning there seems a bit off.
