Interesting... I woke up this morning and thought, "Does anyone actually use Orkut/Friendster/etc. for anything but dating? I should write Scoble and see if he is still into this."
All of these services go through meteoric rises and then people abandon them. That’s because their utility on an ongoing basis is limited.
The real power would be if you combined several of these viral services. For instance, I would like to see Orkut combined with Plaxo. Truth be told I would add one more to the mix, spam filtering. Talk about a powerful white list...
I envision being able to say, “I will accept mail from my friends and my friends’ friends and my …” There would be the ability to cut off offending streams. You could choose the level of trust (e.g. 4 generations). Such a solution would allow me to take back Outlook. My Inbox would be clean. My contacts would be accurate and plentiful. Life would be good.
